Does everything come back to you? Absolutely! And here is the proof: after 4 years! A long-lost Christmas parcel from 2017 has resurfaced on the Ochsenwerder Elbdeich. That’s where its journey began back then—but it never reached Uganda as planned. All the wonderful donated gifts and clothes unfortunately never made it to our kids and friends. The last sign of life from the parcel came months later from South Africa—and then nothing...
Lea is currently in Uganda and visited Irene and her family in Mbale this week. It was a wonderful reunion!
“Finally back—this time there was less nervousness, but even more anticipation. Instead of arriving in a foreign country, I came home. Finally, dusty roads again, crazy boda bodas, beautiful nature, and warm hugs from friends who have become family,” Lea said.
Thank you, dear Lea, for thinking of Help for a Smile! We wish you lots...
Dear members and friends of Help for a Smile,
Our newsletter is full of updates from Uganda and news about the children and young people supported by Help for a Smile:
• School situation:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Museveni has been hesitant to resume in-person classes and reopen schools. This is a major issue across the country. All the more, we are grateful that Irene, with financial support from Help for a Smile, is able to...
Irene Namwano and her son Dickson care for children and young people whose parents are either in prison or have passed away. They make sure the children can attend school, organize food, medical appointments, and visits with family members (for example, visiting parents in prison to maintain contact). Irene and Dickson provide love, care, and a sense of security.
Help for a Smile was founded to support Irene and Dickson—and now more than...
The renewed lockdown in Uganda is being used for gardening—and the kids and teens from Help for a Smile are even enjoying it! The photos show the cultivation of matoke. Matoke is a type of cooking banana and is essential for many families and farmers. The dish made from steamed green bananas is also called matoke—it is one of Uganda’s national dishes.
The guys at work
Schools in Uganda have been closed again due to rising COVID-19 cases. The children and young people will be staying at home for at least 42 days. Public transport is heavily restricted, and additional measures are in place to contain the spread of COVID-19. A development similar to the recent surge in India must be avoided at all costs—we very much hope this can be achieved.
Help for a Smile e.V. is therefore providing short-term support for...
Many thanks to the Elbdeich Apotheken (Elbdeich pharmacies) for donating nearly 600 masks! What’s great is that these high-quality masks can be washed with soap and reused. The masks have been distributed to both children and adults in the village and are a great help, for example during gatherings and when using public transport.
A big thank-you to the Elbdeich pharmacies for this very generous donation!
This children’s book introduces kids in Germany to the lives of children in Africa in a playful way. All proceeds go 100% to support the children in Uganda! This is possible because all the work on the book was done on a voluntary basis and the printing costs were covered by donations.
The book is intended for reading aloud, independent reading, and explaining, for children roughly between the ages of 4 and 9. Available while supplies...
