In Uganda, young people and women especially suffer from a lack of access to vocational training, leading to severe economic and social consequences. These groups face immense challenges due to a lack of education and future prospects. With around 70% affected, this gap significantly hinders the development and economic strength of their communities.
The Education Center addresses these needs by establishing a tailored vocational training program in Bunghoko, Mbale. Our goal is to provide practical knowledge and high-demand skills to improve the employment prospects for youth and women.
The program offers training in trades such as tailoring, shoemaking, hairdressing, construction, and computer technology. All courses are paired with business management training. These competencies lead to a sustainable improvement in livelihoods by creating new income opportunities.
This creates opportunities for young people and women to achieve financial independence, gain self-determination, and support their families. Our target group also includes particularly disadvantaged members of the community.
The project is initially planned for a five-year period, with the goal of long-term establishment. Through this initiative, we aim to reach and support up to 300 youth and women every year!
In Loving Memory of Bernie
This project was born from the initiative of the Osterwald family. Supporting Help for a Smile was a cause close to Bernd’s heart. He had planned to visit the project in person, but tragically, he passed away far too soon. With a generous donation, Bernd’s family laid the foundation for this project to carry forward his commitment and his vision of a brighter future. His children, Isa and Chris, and his wife, Dani, know just how deeply Bernie cared about equal opportunity and education in Uganda.
He would have been thrilled by the idea of the Education Center. We can almost hear him calling out to all our supporters and donors with a smile: “I see you, and I’m so happy for your contribution! Thank you!”
