Emergency aid for 100 families after flooding in Mbale, Uganda

September 18, 2022 Help for a Smile

At the beginning of August, flash floods occurred in the Mbale region in eastern Uganda. After heavy rainfall, two rivers overflowed their banks. The resulting mudslides caused extensive damage. Hundreds of residents were left homeless, and more than 20 people lost their lives.

The village near Mbale where Irene and the children live was also affected. Many families lost their huts, and gardens and fields were destroyed—along with their livelihoods and essential food supplies such as rice, maize, beans, and sugar for the coming weeks and months. The impact is especially severe for people who were already living hand to mouth.

For this reason, after consulting with Irene and Dickson, we as the organization’s board have committed to providing emergency aid to 100 families in the village. These families will receive food supplies, blankets, and soap. With this immediate support, we aim to help prevent even greater hardship.
